Teen Health Issues

If your child or children have finally reached those dreaded "teenage" years, it is time for you to be aware of what is on their mind, especially when it involves their heath and questions that they have about health. As their bodies begin to change into more adult forms, their questions will be more adult in nature, and you need to be prepared for this. It is hard for any parent to realize that their children are growing up, but denying it will only hurt your relationship with your children.

Here are some of the topics you should discuss with your child:
-- Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs): Teens are curious, most are curious about sex. What many do not realize are the dangers associated with having sex. Many only focus on the use, for getting pregnant, and have little knowledge on what STDs are and how they are transmitted. Even though some of this may seem so simple to you, your children have probably not heard everything important and only looked up what they feel comfortable knowing.

-- Alcohol and Drug use: They are dangerous things especially when used by an inexperienced user (drugs by anyone). You need to talk to your teen about this and tell them the risks, not just that it is bad for them, but what can happen to them (like being taken advantage of).

-- Tattoo and Body Piercing Risks: getting a tattoo is often a rite of passage for many teens. If they are so set on it, and you have only a few reservations, perhaps you should go with them-find a clean and well-spoken of tattoo or piercing parlor that you approve of and go with them. This way you can be sure of their safety, and do something together with your child.

-- Counseling: Let them know that being depressed sometimes happens to everyone, and if they don't feel comfortable talking to you, maybe going to a counselor would be good. Get rid of the stereotype that there is something wrong with someone who would like someone objective to talk to, and that it is okay. This way you can also get a feel for what your child needs, if it is really depression or simply a hormonal imbalanced that can be fixed with medication.
